SPEAKERS

Participation in political violence draws on identities and world views that have been shaped and influenced by emotion. Based on interviews conducted with people who have committed acts of violent extremism this accessible presentation explores how participation in violent extremism is linked to a lack of emotional investment in mainstream society, how violent ideologies appeal to intuition rather than fact, and how emotions help to construct alternative moral positions that can justify violent acts as righteous and even necessary.
Associate Professor Paul Duckett, Community Psychologist,
Victoria University
In this short address, I will explore mainstream psychological approaches to the management of emotion as applied to the workplace. I will open up space for us to discuss how certain emotions (such as sadness, anger and anxiety) that fall on the spectrum of normal human experience become rendered pathogenic and other emotions (such as happiness and satisfaction) become rendered salugenic through psychological practice so as to create the conditions for a compliant workforce (a worker that adapts to the environment in which they work, however noxious that environment might be). Through the adoption of mainstream psychological practices, the worker who experiences negative emotions is encouraged to think that they may have a problem that requires some form of psychotherapeutic intervention (either through counselling or mindfulness training) or some form of psychopharmaceutical intervention (medication). I aim to open up an alternative view of those pathologised emotions – a view that ask us to also think of these emotions as signals of things that are wrong in the workplace (a deterioration in the working environment). Finally, I argue that by seeking to remove certain emotions from the workplace we might be starving the workforce of the emotional resources it needs to enact progressive social change.
